Call first, then follow these steps

Tell us what you see, where it is, and send a photo if you can do so safely.

Step by step

Until the rescuer arrives

A snake

Do

  • Stay calm and move away to a distance of a few metres.
  • Keep children and pets away from the area.
  • Watch where it goes from a safe distance, so you can guide the rescuer.
  • If it is inside a room, leave and close the door, and put a towel along the gap underneath.

Don't

  • Do not try to catch, corner or kill it. Most bites happen this way.
  • Do not throw water or objects at it.
  • Do not call untrained people to remove it.

A snakebite

Do

  • Keep the person calm and still, and go to the nearest hospital with anti-venom at once.
  • Keep the bitten limb still and at rest.
  • Remove rings, watches and tight clothing near the bite.

Don't

  • Do not cut the wound, suck it, or apply a tight tourniquet.
  • Do not apply ice, chemicals or herbal remedies.
  • Do not waste time trying to catch the snake.

An injured bird

Do

  • Gently place it in a ventilated cardboard box lined with a cloth.
  • Keep the box in a dark, quiet place away from pets.
  • For birds caught in kite string (manja), call us before cutting anything.

Don't

  • Do not force food or water into its beak.
  • Do not keep handling it or show it to people.
  • A fledgling hopping on the ground is often normal: its parents may be nearby. Call us before picking it up.

A monkey, civet or other mammal

Do

  • Keep well away and give it a clear way out.
  • Keep doors to your home closed and food out of sight.
  • Keep crowds back. Noise and people make animals panic.

Don't

  • Do not feed, tease or chase it.
  • Do not try to trap or pick up a baby animal; the mother is often close by.

The law

“Wild animals are protected under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. Killing, capturing or keeping them is a punishable offence. Rescued animals are reported to the Forest Department.”
