A joint rescue operation by Thane Forest Department, WWA , RAWW and SWO ; a Golden Jackal was rescued from a dry well near Airoli Mangroves.

On 24 January 2019 in a joint rescue operation by Thane Forest Department, WWA , RAWW and SWO ; a Golden Jackal was rescued from a dry well near Airoli Mangroves.

Few boys playing cricket nearby heard the sound from a well. At first they thought it to be dog but later realized it was Jackal. They soon intimated the same to the Forest Department helpline. Within 10-15 minutes we reached the spot and assessed the situation.

First cage was put in the well with the help of ropes followed by cornering the animal and directing it into the cage which did not work on its own and thus decided to send a team.

Our rescuer Omkar Kolekar along with Hasmukh valanju and Mahesh Ithape from RAWW safely managed to resist and direct the animal into cage with grasper, antibite gloves and ladder provided by the Fire Brigade team.

Entire rescue operation was completed smoothly within an hour.

The traumatized animal was then taken to Thane SPCA for a medical check up and necessary treatment where it was examined by a team of vets who conducted the examination revealing the following:

The animal was an adult male , weighting around 7.5 kgs whose x-rays revealed slight sprain in the cervical area suspected due to impact of falling in the dry well. It was also dehydrated as we don’t know the exact date it was fallen into well. After that it was kept at Forest department under constant observation.

Next day its sonography was done at Dr Chariar’s clinic and his all organs were functioning well. He was also given saline which gave him energy. At night he took feeding and passed stool next morning.

Today it was examined by Dr Kshama Shirodkar(TMC) and was declared fit to release. Around 5.30 PM it was released in his habitat in the presence of Forest Officials.

Thanking each and every single person on and off ground who made this operation successful
