World Sparrow Day March 20, 2015 in the World

World Sparrow Day is a day selected to raise awareness of the House Sparrow and other common birds to urban environments, and of threats to their populations, observed on 20 March. It is an international idea by the Nature Forever Society of India in association with the Eco-Sys Action Foundation (France) and several other national and international organizations across the world.

Most of us have memories of waking up to cheery chirpy sounds of sparrows. These tiny, plump, brown-grey birds with short stubby tails were once visible all over the place and very much a part of our landscape. Over the years, this humble member of the passer family has disappeared from our ever expanding concrete jungle. Having lost something which we had often taken for granted, on the World Sparrow Day, let us spare a thought for the sparrows.

Their nests are found in almost every house as well as public places like bus bays and railway stations, where they lives in colonies and survives on food grains and small worms. It is a bird that evokes fond memories and has thus found mention in tradition and songs from time immemorial.

Unfortunately, the House Sparrow is now a disappearing variety. But like all other plants and animals which were once abundant and are now facing an uncertain future, their numbers are also declining across their natural range.

Why House Sparrow is now a disappearing?
Certainly, there is no one single reason for the turn down of house sparrow. Its slow but noticeable disappearance has been labeled as one of the biggest mysteries of recent times. Needless to add, the reward lies unclaimed.

How can you celebrate world sparrow day?
Quite simple! Keep some small grains like millets in a saucer and fill some water in a shallow bowl on your balconies or the terrace. Keep doing it everyday. Don't lose heart if they do not come immediately. One day, they will all come.
