On 17th January 2019, we received a call from Mumbra Police Station about an unidentified snake which was seized from a covert operation carried by Mumbra Police. Two suspects were apprehended red handed while trying to sell the snake off to the illegal black market.
Our Founder Aniket Kadam rushed to the spot along with our rescuers Rohit Mohite, Sushil Gaikwad & Vishwa Seth. Immediately after reaching the spot the snake was identified to be a healthy Adult red sand boa which is Schedule 4 species protected under Wildlife Protection Act 1972.
Red Sand boa is one of the most common snakes in illegal wildlife trade as black magic practices are carried out with this species thus fetching a huge demand and value for the snake.
Case was filed on the two suspects and the snake was taken under our custody for further evaluation and rehabilitation of the snake. Health certificate was issued by Dr. Kshama Shirodkar who is The Head Veterinarian of Thane Municipal Corporation after physically evaluating the snake. The snake will be released and rehabilited back into the wild once the release order is issued from the honorary Court.
Illegal wildlife Trade is a real threat for our wildlife as all the species are being poached from the wild. It is a humble request to everyone if you suspect any illegal activities around you, you can report the following anonymously on 1926 which is the helpline number of Maharashtra Forest Department or our helpline numbers 9757322901/02/03 and/or 100 which is the helpline number of Maharashtra Police.
