Today is Neej Aashad Amavasya, popularly known as 'Gatari'. It marks the beginning of auspicious Shravan month. But this Gatari Nature lovers of Thane city's Yeoor Environmental Society decided to do something different.
Yeoor hills is a lush green forest in the heart of Thane city. But drunk revellers and party enthusiasts flock to Yeoor hills and disturb and destruct this natural beauty by partying in the forest. Nature lovers and Volunteers of Yeoor Environmental Society and Forest department of Yeoor hills, SGNP, decided to curb this evil by celebrating 'Green Gatari' - an event organized for the cause of Conservation of the city's forest.
Today, 14th August, was the 1st day of the event. A tree plantation drive was conducted today in the core area at two different locations. 100 fruiting trees of Indian origin were planted by School children of Pandit School of Yeoor, Patonapada. Before the plantation, the school children marched across Yeoor village, chanting slogans like "save trees and stop littering" in the Yeoor forest. Shyam Ghate and Ravindra Sathaye, senior members of the NGO also told the students about the importance of trees and green patches like Yeoor. Then the children planted saplings in the pits dug by the volunteers under the guidance of experts from the NGO. The first sapling was planted by Sanjay Waghmode, RFO, Yeoor hills, SGNP. Botanists and Tree experts Renee Vyas and Kaustubh Bhagat gave the children information about the tree saplings that were planted. Volunteers of Green Gatari also planted trees on the second site in the core area. After the plantation the school children were provided with light snacks and refreshments.
Renee Vyas conducted a enthusiastic, innovative and friendly activity to connect with the children and to tell them about the importance of biodiversity around human beings. The activity brought smiles on the faces of all children. After that botanists, Kaustubh Bhagat and Renee Vyas conducted a Tree trail for the school children which was interesting and educational for the young brigade of Nature lovers.
